ChatGPT can already read my website. Why add AI search?
Appik Studio
Yes, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can read your website. They do it for people who already use those assistants, and the answer appears in the assistant's own interface. Website AI search answers every visitor on your page, from the pages, documents and FAQ answers you publish. The two serve different moments. Assistants bring visitors to your site, and built-in search helps them once they are there.

What AI assistants already do
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity can search the web and open a page to answer a question. Some browsers and extensions also let the assistant read the page on screen. A visitor who already uses these tools asks where they work, and the assistant can combine your site with other sources.
This channel matters for your visibility. To appear in ChatGPT Search, your pages must stay reachable by OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler, as described in OpenAI's crawler documentation. Built-in search does not replace that work. It serves a later step of the visit.
What the visitor experiences in each case
| Criterion | The visitor's assistant | Built-in AI search |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | People who have the assistant, an account and sometimes a paid plan or an extension | Every visitor, with no account or installation |
| On a phone | Chrome on phones does not run extensions, so the visitor switches apps | Search opens full screen on your page |
| Where the answer appears | In the assistant's interface | On your page, from your buttons or with Cmd+K |
| Sources | Your page, the assistant's index and other sites, including competitors | Your published pages, documents and FAQ answers |
| First result | After the answer is generated | Keyword results while typing, then the AI answer |
| Next step | Chosen by the assistant | Your cited pages, the chat or your team |
Results while the visitor types
Visitors now expect to ask a full question and get an answer right away. In Askolia, search shows keyword results from the second character, before any generation. A question that matches a published FAQ opens its answer directly, with no wait for AI. When the visitor asks for an AI answer, the text appears as it is generated and the sources appear with the validated answer.
Before the visitor types, search can suggest up to five questions from your FAQ. One click opens the answer.
Search that belongs to your site
Search opens from your own buttons, from a floating button, or with Cmd+K on a Mac and Ctrl+K elsewhere. On desktop it opens as a sidebar or a centered window, whichever you choose. On a phone it fills the screen. The visitor stays on your page.
You can install search on its own, without chat. Combined with chat, it lets a visitor continue an unanswered question with your team.
Answers limited to your sources
A visitor's assistant can mix your page with a comparison article, a forum thread or a competitor's page. Built-in search only looks at what you publish, which is the pages of your site, up to five additional websites you choose, your documents and your FAQ. Every AI answer cites at most five sources the visitor can open.
Askolia asks the model to abstain when the sources are not enough, and rejects an answer without a valid citation. This check covers citations, not every claim. Review the answers to your important questions with the method in the evaluation guide.
You also control how answers are written. Search instructions of up to 4,000 characters set length, tone or the page to recommend for a quote request. They guide the writing and are never used as factual evidence.
When built-in search is not worth it
A site with a few pages, clear navigation and few recurring questions does not need it. A well-kept FAQ is enough. Search becomes useful when visitors keep asking the same questions, when information is spread across several pages and documents, or when the site exists in several languages.
Assistants, your site and agents
AI assistants bring visitors, and built-in search helps them on the page. AI agents are also starting to query websites on behalf of their users. Askolia can open your published sources to those agents with an MCP server.
What it costs
Askolia is billed per project. Starter costs CHF 59 per month, or the equivalent of CHF 49 per month with annual billing, and includes 300 AI answer generations per project per month. Growth costs CHF 119 per month, or the equivalent of CHF 99 annually, and includes 5,000. Scale costs CHF 240 per month, or the equivalent of CHF 200 annually, with 20,000 generations. When the allowance runs out, keyword results remain available. Check the current plans before buying.

Frequently asked questions
Do my visitors need a ChatGPT account?
No. Built-in search runs in the visitor's browser, with no account, subscription or extension.
Does built-in search stop ChatGPT from reading my site?
No. It does not change crawler access to your pages. Your robots.txt file remains the setting that allows or blocks assistant crawlers.
What happens when the answer is not on the site?
The AI says it cannot answer from your sources. If chat is installed, the visitor can write to your team.
